Sam Hawkins' 520 Christmas Cross-Stitch Designs

Fans of cross-stitch and of homemade Christmas decorations will be doubly thrilled with this pattern-packed volume. From angels to Santas, colorful wreaths to ice-skating penguins, you're bound to find something to your liking here. Each of the many designs is fully charted in color; many are also shown completed, made into lovely shadow boxes, sachets, pin cushions, trinket boxes, and framed pictures. There are also hundreds of stitchable quotations celebrating the joys of the season. Religious and secular imagery are both given their due: nativity scenes, crosses, carolers, snowmen, toys, ornaments, and, of course, the entire cast of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." --Amy Handy

Mary Engelbreit Cross Stitch for All Seasons

Mary Engelbreit's cheerful designs have become almost ubiquitous, appearing on everything from greeting cards to home fabrics to clothing, and the 80-plus seasonal projects in this book are a happy extension of those colorful pick-me-ups. These designs cover the cross-stitch skill range, from 10-count perforated plastic ornaments and button covers to an embellished gardener's journal cover worked on 36-count linen. The tinted charts, instructions, and specialty-stitch diagrams smooth the creative process for those who want to use these patterns as a jumping-off point for their own whimsy.

Julie Hasler's Fantasy Cross Stitch: Zodiac Signs, Mythical Beasts and Mystical Characters

Drawing on the realms of lore, legend, and magic, Fantasy Cross Stitch is a stunning gallery of intricate designs, a refreshing departure from the usual cross-stitch themes. Celestial subjects and mythological figures abound, from the signs of the zodiac to unicorns and mermaids to wizards and warriors. Accomplished needlework designer Julie Hasler finds inspiration in many places and many eras: medieval Europe, ancient Egypt, Greek and Norse mythology, the Orient, and the heavens. Each of the 23 highly detailed designs is fully charted in color, plus there is nice background information about each one. We learn, for example, that the ibis-headed Egyptian deity Thoth is credited with the invention of hieroglyphics, and that the Chinese dragon's waking, sleeping, and breathing was believed to determine night and day. In addition, a "symbol library" charts 35 smaller motifs (such as the yin-yang, Viking runes, Hindu talismans, and early Christian symbols). With subtle shadings and elaborate detail, these designs are apparently meant for the more experienced stitcher. But the artwork is good enough that anyone intrigued by these mystical motifs may even want to consider adapting them to other crafts. --Amy Handy

Donna Kooler's 555 Christmas Cross-Stitch Designs

Donna Kooler enthusiasts have more reason to rejoice at Christmas with this extensive selection of holiday cross-stitch designs. Her Santas are especially charming; she manages to cram into a miniscule amount of space a sprightly collection of varied St. Nicks. The "Nature Christmas" chapter is also quite agreeable, with well-rendered animals and even some touches of humor (a turtle with a Christmas tree atop its shell; a tiny ant struggling to carry a mighty candy cane). It's too bad so few of these many designs are photographed in finished form; the only completed stitchery shown are the samplers at the beginning of each of the five chapters. Though all the motifs are carefully charted in color, busy holiday crafters generally appreciate being able to see at a glance exactly how they stitch up before making a choice about what to spend time on. But any cross-stitcher who enjoys Donna's work probably can't go too far wrong with any of them. --Amy Handy

Painting

Drawing

Sculpture

Painting is the practice of applying pigment suspended in a carrier (or medium) and a binding agent (a glue) to a surface (support) such as paper, canvas or a wall.

Drawing is one of many ways to making an image; it is the process of making marks on a surface by applying pressure from or moving a tool on the surface. These marks may represent what the artist sees when drawing, a remembered or imagined scene or abstraction.

Sculpture is any three-dimensional form created as an artistic expression. Sculpture is primarily concerned with space: occupying it, relating to it, and influencing the perception of it.
